Theeffectofmatfabricationparametersi.e.stitchingdensity(SD)andpenetrationdepth(PD)onthemechanicalpropertiesofneedlepunchednonwovenkenaffibrematreinforcedepoxycompositesproducedviaresintransfermoulding(RTM)techniquewasinvestigated.Kumarcl]reportedthatappearanceanddegreeofcompressionwhichmayinfluencethestrengthofaneedlefeltnonwovenfibermat,weremainlyinfluencedbyneedlearrangementintheneedleboard,needleparameters,needlingparameters(penetrationdepthandstitchingdensityanddirectionofneedling).Thustheaimofthisstudyistoinvestigatetheeffectofneedlingparametersfactorsi.eSDandPDinenhancingthemechanicalstrengthofkenaffiberepoxycomposites.ThevariationintheSDvaluefrom25cm-2t075cm-2andPDfroml.0cmt02.0cmseemstogivesignificantchangesonmechanicalpropertiesofthecompositesbyalteringthefiberinterlockingpatternwithinthenonwovens.TheidealSDandPDfornonwovenkenaffibrewererespectively50crrl-2andl.5cm(SsoPi.s).Asignificantenhancementofflexuralpropertiesandimpactpropertieswasobservedfortheresultedcomposites.NeithertoohighSDnorPDwasresultedinexcessivefibrebreakageandlooseningofphysicalinterlockingthusreducedtheflexuralstrengthofthecomposites.6%NaOHofalkalinetreatmentisfoundtobeoptimumconcentrationfortreatingkenaffibrecompositeswhichenhancedthefiber-matrixadhesionwithepoxymatrix.SimilarobservationwasfoundbyEdeerozeyetal.[2]inwhich6%ofNaOHistheoptimumtreatmentintermsofenhancingthepropertiesofkenaffiber.Goodfiber-matrixinteractionimpartedbetterflexuralandthermalpropertiesbutslightlyreducedtheimpactpropertiesoftheresultedcomposites.
