Throughtheevolutionofmanycenturies,woodachieveshigherstiffness,strength,fracturetoughnessandkeepitslightweightatthesametimes.Theeminentmechanicalandphysicalpropertiesofwoodarecloselyrelatedtotheexcellentmicrostructuresofwood.Inthispaper,ascanningelectronmicroscope(SEM)wasusedtocarefullyobservethemicrostructureofspruce,akindoflightwood.Theobservationresultsshowedthatwoodpossessakindoftypicalsandwichstructures,whichconsistsofcountlesswoodcells.Thewoodcellsarearrangedwithinterphaseformandparalleltothesurfaceofthewood.Morecarefulobservationshowedthateachwoodcellconsistofwood-fiberpliesandorganicmatrix.Thefiberpliesindifferentlocationsofthewoodhavedifferentdirectionswhichcomposeakindofhelicoidalmicrostructure.Basedontheobservation,thebucklingstrengthofthesandwichstructureofthewoodwasanalyzedbasedonitsrepresentedmodel.Thefunctionofthehelicoidal-fiberarrangementinimprovingthefracturetoughnessofthewoodwasanalyzedbasedontheideaoffiber-pulloutenergy.Theanalyticalresultsshowedthatthehelicoidalfiberarrangementcouldmarkedlyincreasethefracturetoughnessofthewood,whichwasverifiedwithaspecialexperiment.
