Inordertomanufacturelarger,thicker,morehomogeneousandcomplicatedthermoplasticcompositesthancurrentlycanbeachievedbymeltprocessing,avacuuminfusionprocessiscurrentlybeingdevelopedusingareactivethermoplasticpolymercalledanionicpolyamide-6(APA-6).Inpreviousstudiesitwasprovedthattheanionicpolyamide-6(APA-6)resinthatisusedhasexcellentmechanicalproperties.Naturalfiber,asakindoflowcost,lightweight,highspecificstrengthandstiffness,andnaturaldegradationofenvironment-friendlymaterial,usedinreinforcedcompositesiswidelyconcerned.However,nonaturalfiberreinforcedreactivethermoplasticpolymergradeshavebeenpreparedsofar.ThemainreasonistheapparentlypolymerizedbarrierbetweennaturalfiberandtheAPA-6,whichresultsinincompletepolymerizationwhenputtogether.Firstly,thereactionmechanisminthein-situpolymerizationprocessofnaturalfiber-reinforcedAPA-6wasdiscussedbycastingprocess.ItwasshownthatthelargenumberofhighlyreactivehydroxylonthesurfaceofnaturalfiberproducedaseriousbarriertoAPA-6,andthefiberbecamedarkbrown.Inordertosolvetheproblem,amethodwasadoptedbyusingalow-activityinitiatorcalledcaprolactammagnesiumbromide,whichhadinertreactivityandweaklyalkaline,limitedthereactionwiththehydroxylgroupsonthecellulose.Itwouldreducetheconsumptionoftheinitiator.Thustheinhibitorrolehasbeensignificantlyimproved.Thenasuitablemorphologicalstructureoffiberfabricwasselectedtoyieldintegratedcompositeswithanaveragethicknessof2.5mmandafiberweightcontentof40%byvacuuminfusionprocess.Thesoxhletextractionanddifferentialscanningcalorimeter(DSC)measurementsrespectivelysuggestedthedegreeofconversionandcrystallizationofcompositeswashigher.RemarkableimprovementofmechanicalpropertieswasachievedforAPA-6/naturalfibercompositesthroughdynamicmechanicalanalysis(DMA)andthree-pointbendingtest.Favorableinterfacialadhesionandwettabilitywererevealedbyscanningelectronmicroscopy(SEM)observation.
