Themorphology,microstructure,tensileanddynamicmechanicalpropertiesofsolidandmicrocellularpoly(lacticacid)(PLA)/polyhydroxybutyrate-valerate(PHBV)blendsandPLA/PHBV/claynanocompositestogetherwiththermalandtheologicalpropertiesofsolidPLA/PHBVblendsandPLA/PHBV/claynanocompositeswereinvestigated.Conventionalandmicrocellularinjection-moldingprocesswereusedtoproducesolidandmicrocellularASTMtensiletestbars,respectively.Nitrogeninthesupercriticalstatewasusedasthephysicalblowingagentinthemicrocellularinjectionmoldingexperiments.ThetheologicalbehaviorofPLA/PHBVblendsexhibitedaNewtonianfluidbehaviorwheretheirnanocompositecounterpartsshowedastrongshear-thinningbehavioroverthefullfrequencyrange.Anobviouspseudo-solid-likebehavioroverawiderangeoffrequenciesinthePLA/PHBV/claynanocompositessuggestedastronginteractionbetweenthePLA/PHBVblendandthenanoclaythatrestrictedtherelaxationofthepolymerchains.PLA/PHBV/claynanocompositespossessahighermodulusandgreatermeltstrengththanPLA/PHBVblends.Theadditionofnanoclaydecreasedtheaveragecellsize,andincreasedthecelldensityofmicrocellularPLA/PHBVspecimens.Asacrystallinenucleationagent,nanoclaysignificantlyimprovedthecrystallinityofPHBVintheblend,thusleadingtoarelativelyhighermodulusforbothsolidandmicrocellularspecimens.However,nanoclayhadlesseffectonthetensilestrengthandstrain-at-break.
