Toensuregoodcompatibilitybetweenpolymerandmontmorillonite(MMT),threetypesorganophilic-MMTwerepreparedandtheinfluenceofmodifyingagentstyleonthemodificationeffectwasstudied.TheresultsofX-raydiffraction(XRD)showthatthemodifiedreagentsareallintercalatedintothegalleriesofMMT,whicharealsoprovedbypatternsofFT-IRandthermogravimetricanalysis(TGA),andthespacingofMMTlayersincreasesfrom1.23nmofthepristineMMTto2.10nm,3.52nmand4.14nmforCTAB,SDSandDBSmodifiedMMTrespectively.Theresultsalsoindicatethatthed-spacingandexfoliationdegreeofanionicsurfactantsinsertedMMTisbiggerthanthatofthecationicsurfactantstreatedMMT,whichareusuallyusedtopreparationpolymerlayeredsilicatenanocompositesinliteratures.SoPS/SDS-MMTandPS/DBS-MMTnanocompositeswerepreparedbysuspensionpolymerization.ThestructureofcomplexwerecharacterizedbyXRDandnopeakcanbeobservedbythespectra,whichsuggestthattheclayplateletshavebeenexfoliatedanddispersedinthePSmatrixandthebothcomplexareallhaveexfoliatedstructure.FT-IRspectrumsanalysisconfirmedtheexistenceofMMTwhichimpliedthatthelayersofsilicatewasdistributingincomposites.TheresultsofTGAshowthatnanocompositespossessexceptionallyhighthermalstabilityandtheDBStreatedcompositehashigherthermalstabilitythanthatofSDStreated.
