Polysulfone(PSf)membraneswerepreparedbythewet-phase-inversionusing1-hexadecyl-3-methylimidazoliumthiocyanate[C16mim][SCN]asannewadditive.Scanningelectronmicroscopewasutilizedtovisualizecross-sectionsofthemembranestogainmorebetterunderstandingtheinfluenceof[C16mim][SCN]onthepore-forming.Moreover,Membrane-formingmechanismusingionicliquidasaporeformerwasalsodiscussed.Theresultsshowedthationicliquid[C16mim][SCN]hadrestrainedthedemixingofthecastingsolutionsandhastheabilityofthepore-forming,higherthanthoseofitsanaloguesofPEG400.Withincreaseofconcentrationofionicliquid[C16mim][SCN]incastingsolutions,thestructuresofthemembraneschangedfromasymmetricfingerporestothespongy-finger-macrovoidstructureofthepores.ComparedwithPEG400asapore-former,[C16mim][SCN]hasthepore-formingabilitytothemembraneatlowerconcentrationof[C16mim][SCN]inthecastingsolution.Especially,atthe4:76ratioof[C16mim][SCN]/NMP,thepreparedmembranehastheasymmetricfinger-poresstructure,withthe2~6μmporesclosetosurfacelayerandthe10~24μmporeforitssublayer.ItsretentionrateofPEG10000andsolutionfluxare97.1%and48.7L·h-1·m-2.Meanwhile,ionicliquidcanbeaplasticizer,accordingthethermalpropertiesofthemembranes.
