Theabilitytorendercarbonnanotubes(CNTs)withbiocompatibilityopensupanentirenewandexcitingresearchdirectioninthefieldofbiologicalandbiomedicalengineeringincludingsensing,imagingandscaffoldingforcellgrowth.ThisworkisconcernedwithchemicalmodificationoftheCNTssurfacewithbiologicalcomponents.Wehavepreparedabiocompatiblecompositethroughthecovalentlinkbetweencarboxylicgroupsoffunctionalizedmulti-walledcarbonnanotubes(MWCNTs)andhydroxylgroupsofpoly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate)(PHBV).FT-IRresultsdemonstratedchemicalmodificationwasachievedthroughtheesterificationreaction.TEMshowedthattheMWCNTswerecoatedwithauniformPHBVlayer,andtheMWCNTsexistedasahardbackbone.Thermalanalysisindicatedthatthecrystallizationbehaviorofcompositewasmarkedlyhinderedduetothepresenceofcarbonnanotubes.WiththeincorporationofMWCNTsandPHBV,asignificantincreaseinthethermalstabilityofPHBVwascaused.ThecurvesofTGAshowedthattemperaturedeterminedat5%weightloss(T5%),initialdecompositiontemperature(T0),maximumdecompositiontemperature(Tmax)andcompletedecompositiontemperature(Tf)increasedbytheamplitudeof18℃,19.3℃,20.5℃and36.1℃,respectively,comparedtothoseoforiginalPHBV.
