Theaimofthisworkistostudytheeffectofpolyhedraloligomericsilsesquioxanes(POSS)ontheflammabilityandthermaldegradationbehaviorofthethinintumescentcoatingsconsistingofammoniumpolyphosphate(APP)-pentaerythritol(PER)-melamine(MN)incorporatedacrylicresin.Thefireprotectivecapability,smokedensityandheatreleaserateofthecoatingswerecharacterizedbythebutanegasflametest,smokechambertestandconecalorimetry;theintumescentcharmorphologywasobservedbyhighmagnificationzoommicroscope;thethermaldegradationbehaviorofintumescentcoatingswereinvestigatedusingX-rayphotoelectronspectroscopy(XPS).TheflametestresultsshowedthatPOSS1leadstothehighestoffireprotectiveproperties,thesmallestdecreaseofsmokedensityandheatreleaserateofthethinintumescentcoatings.TheXPSresultsdemonstratethatthesynergisticeffecttakesplacebetweenPOSS1andAPP-PER-MNintumescentflameretardantsduringthermaldegradationprocess.
