Intumescentflameretardation(IFR)ofplasticshasarousedagreatattentioninrecentyears.Inthepresentstudy,TheflammabilityofthePPcompositescontainingIFRadditives,i.e.melaminephosphate(MP)andDPER,TPERorPEPAwascharacterizedbylimitingoxygenindex(LOI),UL-94andtheconecalorimeter.ItisfoundthatthePPcompositescontainingonlyMPdoesnotshowgoodflameretardancyevenat40%additivelevel.ComparedwiththePP/MPbinarycomposites,theLOIvaluesofthePP/MP/PER(PP/MP/DPER,PP/MP/TPERorPP/MP/PEPA)ternarycompositesattheproperadditiveratiosareallincrease,andtheUL94ratingsofmostternarycompositesstudiedareraisedtoV-0.TheimprovementoftheflameretardancyoftheternaryPPcompositesmaybecausedbytheformationofgoodandcompactintumescentchar.Theconecalorimeterresultsshowthattheheatreleaserateandsmokeemissionofsometernarycompositesdecreaseincomparisonwiththebinarycomposite.Moreover,thethermaldecompositionofthecompositeswerestudied.
