Thefirebehavioursofbuildingmaterialswithandwithoutfireretardantarerecommendedtobeassessedbyaconecalorimeter,insteadoftestingonlytheirignitability.Thisisabench-scaleequipmentwithusefuldataspecifiedinthefirecodes.Atypicalsandwichpanelwithfireretardantcommonlyusedinthemarketwastakenasanexampletoillustratethetestingprocedure.Fourradiativeheatfluxesof20kWm-2,25kWm-2,50kWm-2and65kWm-2wereappliedtostudytheburningbehaviourofthesampleunderpost-flashoverfires.Thetransientheatreleaserate,masslossrate,smokeemissionrateandtoxicgasconcentrationsincludingcarbondioxideandcarbonmonoxideweremeasured.Fromtheresults,foamwithfireretardantappearstobesafeinanaccidentalfirewithlowheatreleaserateattheearlystage.However,performanceunderhighheatfluxinapost-flashoverisaconcern.
